A book, including photographs and drawings, for both the professional and hobby level machinist. Intended primarily for the home shop hobbyist/enthusiast. Includes plans for various machine shop projects as well as instructional information about operating various machines found in both home-based and professional machine shops. Review: Just released, from the fertile mind of Home Shop Machinist and Machinist's Workshop author Randolph Bulgin, comes the newest book offering to the home shop hobbyist titled Randolph's Shop. Randolph has assembled a fine array of shop projects to challenge the most ardent machinist or to assist the novice. Hobbyists interested in welding, lathe work, millwork, and blacksmithing will find numerous articles of interest. If you are also a shooting hobbyist, two projects will certainly pique your interest, a rifle rest and a powder measure. The most prominent project of this book is the construction of a first-class, heavy-duty variable-speed band saw. Robust construction and generous proportions make this machine the queen of any fabrication shop. With a 36" throat and a blade speed range of 83 FPM to 4718 FPM, there's hardly a home shop-sized sawing task that cannot be handled, indeed, even in most production shops. The variable-speed drive section of the band saw chapter will be of particular interest to those who may wish to re-motor their existing band saw or possibly other machines. The 8-1/2" X 11" hardbound book contains 240 pages jammed with over 325 black & white photographs that profusely illustrate the construction of seven projects, three procedures and four shop improvement projects. With 47 pages of professionally done CAD drawings, which amply describe each of the construction projects, the reader is presented with all the necessary design criteria to facilitate the completion of the chosen item. Veteran readers of Home Shop Machinist and Machinist's Workshop will recognize four of the projects presented within Randolph's new book. Though the four have been previously printed, each of them has been updated and expanded with greater photographic coverage. The author's easy writing style, including a wonderful array of anecdotes, will keep your attention from the first chapter, which covers the pros and cons of setting up your shop and includes some insight on a shop business along with some wisdom regarding employees, to the last chapter that covers the fabrication of ... eggs. --Neil Knopf --- Editor --- Home Shop Machinist magazine About the Author: J.
