The Kokoda Track, 1942. Jack and Hoshi are soldiers on opposite sides in the war who meet in battle, discovering that they have much more in common than they had ever realised. Photographs in the Mud is a beautifully illustrated and moving story of events on the Kokoda Track during the Second World War from the point of view of two soldiers - one Australian, the other Japanese. It tells a compassionate story about the personal human tragedy of war, for both the combatants and their loved ones at home. About the Author: Dianne Wolfer (born 1961) is an award-winning Australian children's author who lives on the south coast of Western Australia. Her title Lighthouse Girl won the 2010 West Australian Young Readers' Award for Picture Books, and was shortlisted for the 2009 New South Wales Premier's History Award. It is based on the true story of Fay Howe, daughter of the Breaksea Island lighthouse keeper, who relayed messages for the departing ANZAC troops in 1914. Her picture book Photographs in the Mud was inspired by a research trip along the Kokoda Track and is used as a reference for international workshops promoting peaceful 'Discourse Analysis'. It was recently published in Japanese. Dianne is the Western Australian Advisor for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Her most recent book was Lighthorse Boy, which was a sequel to Lighthouse Girl.
